Chapter 16

The dancing drew to a slow finish as the fire in the hearth grew to nothing but embers.

Drunk and swaying, everyone found their way to their beds in the early hours, though Augustine had left long before then.

Everyone else was able to fall asleep quickly, and the snores were heavier than usual with the aid of wine.

My own sleep was fitful, and I found myself waking several times in the night—trapped in my own thoughts.

Part of me wished for the days when I would sit alone and pray for my magical majority, believing it would lead me to a better life. One without drudgery and hard work.

Somehow, those two things were what I missed most even though I had barely a day without backache from carrying trays and cracked fingernails from scrubbing.

When the sun began to crest the sky and the dim light of the winter dawn filtered through the dust-stained windows, everyone groaned as they pushed themselves out of bed and began to get ready for the day. I stayed in bed on the edge of sleep, with my blanket over my head.

A strange silence blanketed the room just as people began to filter out of the room, and it was enough for me to get out of bed to try and find the source of the tension.

I hadn’t heard her come in, but Mary-Belle Bryne herself was perched on the end of my bed. My belongings had been scattered while I was sleeping, including the blood-red ribbon that had once belonged to my mother.

The edges of the ribbon were frayed as Mary-Belle worked the strip of fabric between her fingers, taunting me without saying a word.

Tabitha and Frannie were at her side, their expressions matching the smug glee that Mary-Belle wore. A smile that said, ‘I’m better than you will ever be.’

, I did not doubt her confidence—Mary-Belle would very likely become an avatar for the Morrigan and have the power of death, darkness, and war at her fingertips soon enough. The twisted evil in her smile told me that whatever she promised, she could deliver.

I had no power. No recourse.

I watched as she silently twisted my dead mother’s ribbon between her fingers, over and under, like a coiled snake.

“I heard that went to dinner with the Arch-Fae.” Mary-Belles eyes narrowed. “How pleasant for you.”

I said nothing.

There were no words to make the situation better or counter whatever supposed slight Mary-Belle had felt that I had committed.

Behind my bed, I spotted Maggie on her own cot. Trying to make her body as small as possible in the shadows, and I instantly knew where Mary-Belle had got her information.

“You think that you’re better than me because Cillian Lane proposed to you?” Mary-Belle said delicately, somehow infusing her icy rage in her gentle voice.

I shook my head. “No.”

“Cillian Lane is a Créacht Sídhe.” Mary-Belle continued as if I hadn’t spoken. “We would be a more suitable match than some magicless nobody.”

“You’re marrying Tadgh.” I pointed out, wincing when the words left my mouth.
